Anniversary Calculator

The Anniversary Calculator tool converts a given date into the exact amount of time that has passed since then, for example wedding dates, start of relationships, first day at work or company founding dates. After entering a date it calculates the number of years, months and days that have passed until today and shows the next anniversary and its year. For wedding anniversaries and relationship anniversaries traditional and modern gift ideas are also suggested for each respective year.

Here's how to use this tool to calculate anniversaries:

Select the occasion (e.g. wedding, relationship, job) and enter the corresponding date. The results will then be shown on the right. You can see the past time span, the next anniversary with a countdown as well as gift ideas for this occasion.

The reference date for the calculation is today by default. If you want to check results for another day, such as a planned future anniversary or a past date, please change "Calculate from" to a specific date and then select your desired date. If you only know the month and year, enter the 1st of that month; the results will be accurate within a few weeks.

How long have you been married?

Calculating the full number of years is simple. If you have not celebrated an anniversary this year yet, subtract your wedding year from the current year and then subtract one more year. The tool will also help you determine months and days at the same time since the number of days varies by month and leap years sometimes add another day.

The calculator first subtracts the number of full years, then subtracts the number of full months from the remaining time and finally calculates the remaining days. The result is always a date in the actual calendar. A couple who married on June 15th, 2001 and whose anniversary is calculated for July 17th, 2026 have been married for 25 years, 1 month and 2 days. This is not rounded to 25.1 years. In addition to this striking result you can see the total number of months, weeks and days as well as decimal values for tables where decimal input is required.

What anniversary is coming up?

The panel shows the date of your next anniversary, the day of the week, how many days are remaining and what type of anniversary it is. A small graph shows where you are in the current anniversary cycle with the number of days since last anniversary and the number of days until next anniversary shown separately.

You can use this section when planning a celebration or gift for yourself, your parents or friends. If you know that the 30th anniversary is in 120 days, then there's enough time to prepare something special.

Anniversary gifts after years

The tradition of giving certain materials as gifts for each wedding anniversary dates back hundreds of years. A well-known modern list was expanded in 1937 by American jewelers. The materials start simple and become more valuable over the years. In the first year, it is paper, in the 25th year silver, in the 50th gold, and in the 60th diamonds.

On wedding anniversaries and relationship anniversaries a computer will list traditional and modern gifts that correspond to the particular year. These are not obligations but just ideas. The significance of the day itself is more important and an affectionate gift is always better than an expensive one.

Types of anniversaries:

Wedding anniversaries celebrate the date of a wedding and have traditional names such as Silver Wedding, Pearl Wedding, Ruby Jubilee, Golden Wedding or Diamond Jubilee along with corresponding gifts. Anniversary dates take the starting date of the relationship as their starting point, and since many people celebrate this in the same way, the calculator also offers anniversary gift ideas.

Work anniversaries document the date of entry or founding of a company and are typically celebrated in organizations after 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 years of service. Under "Other" you can include any possible events such as graduation date, moving house, a sobriety date, or getting a pet. Here too the elapsed time and countdown are shown.

Leap years and calendars:

All calculations use the Gregorian calendar, a private standard calendar used since 1582. This automatically takes into account leap years and differences in number of days per month within the time period. A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4 but century years must be divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, while 1900 and 2100 are not.

If the event actually takes place on February 29th, this date only occurs every four years. In non-leap years, anniversary dates are usually celebrated on February 28th. The calculator will mark this case so couples who married or started a relationship in a leap year do not have to wait for an unlikely date.
