The handrail support spacing calculator allows you to calculate the number of supports required for a handrail and the distance between each support. This tool can be used for both terraces and stair railings. It allows you to calculate the required quantity by subtracting the length of posts or determine the order quantity based on the number of identical railing sections.
What is a handrail holder?
The balusters are the vertical elements that fill in the space between the rail and the deck or stairs below. When the balusters are arranged in a row, they are called balustrade. Sometimes they are also referred to as thin spindles but these are usually attached at the bottom crossbar and do not go all the way down to the ground.
Whatever they are called, the arrangement is similar: balusters support the railing and are thicker vertical members that divide it into sections.
The 4-inch rule.
US building codes limit the spacing between the uprights of a railing structure. A common rule is that a sphere with a diameter of 4 inches must not fit through an opening in the railings; therefore, spacings should be no more than 4 inches.
This rule is for safety purposes. Smaller gaps prevent small children from falling through the railing or getting caught between the posts. The International Residential Code sets this maximum value for residential buildings, and many decks are tested to this standard as well. So you should consider 4 inches as a ceiling, not a target.
How to use this calculator:
Choose whether you want to calculate a horizontal or stair railing construction. For the horizontal railings, measure and enter the actual distance between the inner edges of the two supports. Then enter the width of the supports and the maximum allowed gap.
For stair railings, enter the horizontal projection length and total height of the structure. The calculator will calculate the diagonal length of the railing and determine the spacing between posts along the incline.
If you have measured the entire rail, enable the 'Supports' option to enter the number and width of supports instead of a single overall spacing. The tool will then subtract the space required for the supports. Enabling the 'Order options' allows you to add additional material consumption and calculate the quantity for multiple sections at the same spacing.
Calculation
There are two practical methods to understand this calculation. The first is a quick method of estimating the number of supports required where each support is considered to occupy one pitch.
Here L is the length of the railing, p is the number of posts, w_p is the width of each post, w is the width of the rail-post system and g is the desired spacing. For example, a 20-foot (240 in) long railing with five 2-inch wide posts, a 2-inch wide rail-post system and a 3-inch spacing would require approximately (240 - 10)/(2 + 3) = 46 posts.
The second method is the actual calculation method used by this tool. It determines the minimum number of supports required to ensure that each spacing does not exceed the maximum, then calculates the exact even spacing. If there are n supports, the equal spacing will be n+1 with one support outside each end support and one between each pair of adjacent supports.
Assuming a free space of 72 inches, the post width is 1.5 inches and the maximum value is 4 inches. The number of posts would be the rounded up result of (72 - 4) / (1.5 + 4), which is 12.36 rounded up to 13 railings posts. The even spacing would be (72 - 13 x 1.5) / 14 = 3.75 inches and the center-to-center distance would be (72 + 1.5) / 14 = 5.25 inches. Rounding up is important here, if you use only 12 posts then the spacing will be 4.15 inches which exceeds the maximum value.

The difference between railings for terraces and staircases:
Horizontal railings are measured along a straight line from the inside of one post to the inside of the next with the number of posts determining how this total length is divided into equal spaces.
Because stair railings run along a sloping surface, their length is longer than the horizontal distance that the stairs take up. A calculation tool calculates this diagonal length from the horizontal projection length and the slope.
The calculator then determines the spacing between posts along the sloped surface. Note that different spacing rules may apply to stair railings than for flat railings, so be sure to check local requirements before cutting your material.

Practical tips for a correct arrangement:
Measure the railing area in multiple places. Since posts are rarely perfectly vertical, there can be a difference between top and bottom even within one section.
It is recommended to buy about 10% more balusters than calculated. The required amount increases slightly due to cuts, cracks and occasionally bent parts. It's cheaper to have some material left over than to go shopping again. For tapered balusters measure the narrowest part. The largest distance will be there.

Frequently asked questions
- What distance should I keep between balustrade supports on a terrace?
The spacing must be 4 inches or less since no opening can be large enough for a 4 inch diameter ball to pass through. This tool calculates the minimum uniform spacing that will meet the maximum gap requirement based on the length of the railing section and the width of the posts. Normally this is slightly less than 4 inches.
- How many handrail posts do I need?
The length of the open area is divided by the sum of the width and spacing of the posts, rounded up. As a rough guideline, a railing construction with 4 inch spacing will require about three posts per foot. A calculation tool however determines the exact number based on your measurements.
- What does the rule mean for balls with a diameter of 4 inches?
This is a safety requirement in building codes for residential buildings. If a 4 inch diameter ball will not fit through any space in the railing, then the opening is small enough to protect young children. This rule applies both to the spacing between the uprights and also to the spacing within the uprights themselves.
- Are the distances between the supports on stair railings equal?
The calculation method is the same but as the supports are on a sloping handrail and not horizontal, the calculator uses the diagonal length. Depending on regulations different opening sizes may apply to stairways so check local requirements.
- Should I use the nominal dimensions or the actual width of the balustrade posts?
Please use the actual width. The actual dimension of a 2x2 brace is about 1.5 inches and not 2 inches. If you use the stated dimension, then the spacing between braces will be too wide and may exceed allowable dimensions.
