Feet and inches are units of length in the imperial system of measurement. They are still commonly used today in the United States, Britain, and some other regions. The relationship between them is simple: one foot is exactly equal to twelve inches. This calculator allows you to convert feet into inches and vice versa, as well as display the corresponding values in centimeters, meters, yards, and millimeters.

How to convert feet to inches:

Since there are 12 inches in a foot, to convert feet into inches simply multiply by 12. The result will not be rounded. This is because one foot is exactly twelve inches by definition, so the conversion is accurate.

inches=feet×12\text{inches} = \text{feet} \times 12

Suppose a shelf is 5 feet long. If you multiply 12 by 5, the answer is 60 inches. A 10-foot ceiling would be 120 inches and a 6-foot-tall person would be 72 inches tall.

How many inches are in a foot?

A foot is equal to 12 inches. This fact forms the basis for all conversion relationships. Since there are twelve inches in a foot and three feet in a yard, then one yard equals 36 inches.

1 ft=12 in1\ \text{ft} = 12\ \text{in}

How to convert inches to feet:

In the opposite direction of conversion, one foot is equal to 12 inches, so the number of inches must be divided by 12. When the number of inches is divided by 12, it gives the number of feet.

feet=inches÷12\text{feet} = \text{inches} \div 12

For example, 30 inches divided by 12 equals 2.5 feet which is the same as 2 feet and 6 inches. To use this calculator to convert, select "inches" from the input unit list and check out the result in feet as well as the detailed display of feet and inches.

Convert feet and inches to total number of inches.

Heights or everyday lengths are often given as a combination of whole feet and inches, e.g. 5ft 8in. To find the total number of inches, multiply the number of feet by 12 and then add on any additional inches.

For example, 5 feet 8 inches is equal to 68 inches because you multiply 5 by 12 (which equals 60) and then add 8. 5 feet 10 inches would be 70 inches. The calculator will accept inputs in a combination of feet and inches and show the total length as well as break it down into any desired lengths in feet and inches.

Examples of conversions:

Here are some examples of end-to-end conversions.

  • To convert feet to inches, multiply by 12. So 5 x 12 = 60 inches.

  • To convert feet to inches, multiply 6 by 12, which is 72 inches. This is a typical height.

  • 0.5 A half foot is equal to six inches.

  • 2 feet and 6 inches is equal to 30 inches, calculated by multiplying 2 by 12 and adding 6.

  • To convert back to the other direction, divide 100 inches by 12 which is 8.3333 feet or 8 feet and 4 inches.

What is a foot?

A foot is a unit of length in the yard-pound system and US customary system equal to exactly 12 inches or one-third of a yard. Since an international yard is defined as being exactly 0.9144 meters, a foot is therefore exactly 0.3048 meters. The term "foot" is often abbreviated as "ft", and can also be represented by a single apostrophe, so that for example five feet could be written as either 5 ft or 5'.

The foot is currently used primarily in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom for measuring human height, room sizes and short distances. It is also used to measure altitude in aviation and elevation on maps of almost all countries even if those countries use the metric system.

What is an inch?

An inch is a unit of length equal to one twelfth of a foot or one thirty-sixth of a yard. As there are exactly 0.9144 meters in a yard, an inch is also exactly 2.54 centimeters. The word "inch" is often abbreviated as "in", and it can also be represented by double prime marks, so that "5 inches" can be written as either "5 in" or "5"".

The standard length of a ruler is 12 inches or one foot. This explains why the two units are so closely related. The inch is used to express screen sizes, tire dimensions, rainfall amounts and small parts measurements, and it is also used in combination with feet to express people's height.

The expression of feet and inches.

In American and British usage a single apostrophe symbol (') is used to denote feet while the double apostrophe symbol (") is used for inches. So five feet ten inches would be written as 5' 10". On keyboards, single quotation marks are usually used for feet and double quotation marks for inches, e.g. 5' 10". Both notations have the same meaning.

Here's how to use this calculator.

  • Enter the length in the appropriate field.

  • The switch button allows you to select the unit. The default unit for converting feet to inches is feet. If you want to start with a different unit, you can choose from inches, centimeters, meters, yards, millimeters, kilometers or miles.

  • Check out the results shown above in inches, and also next to it is the value in feet.

  • Scroll the results card to see the breakdown in feet and inches as well as centimeters, meters, yards, and millimeters. For longer distances, kilometers and miles are also shown.
