The meter is the base unit of the metric system which is used almost everywhere in the world while a mile is a unit in the yard-pound system and US customary system that's still being used in the United States and Great Britain for measuring road distances and large distances. So to convert meters to miles, you do this:

A mile is exactly 1,609.344 meters, so to convert from meters to miles you divide by 1,609.344. Dividing by 1,609.344 is the same as multiplying by 0.000621371, which is the reciprocal of 1,609.344.

For example, dividing 600 meters by 1,609.344 gives approximately 0.3728 miles. A distance of 5,000 meters is equivalent to 5,000 divided by 1,609.344, or 3.1069 miles, and 100 meters is equal to 0.0621 miles.

Converting the other way is just as easy. Since one mile is 1,609.344 meters, you can convert miles to meters by multiplying the number of miles by 1,609.344.

Meters, miles, kilometers

Since the meter is a metric unit, the everyday value nearest to it would be the kilometer. A mile is equal to 1.609344 kilometers, and one kilometer is approximately 0.621371 miles, which means that a kilometer is slightly less than two-thirds of a mile.

Intuitively, since there are 0.621 miles per 1,000 meters (one kilometer), 35 kilometers would be the equivalent of 35,000 meters, or 21.75 miles. The calculator will also display the result in kilometers next to the miles so that you can see both measurements for distance.

Running and racing distances in meters and miles

Track and field athletics and road running often use meters to measure distances but people often speak in miles which is the most common reason for converting between these two units. Here are some known race distances:

• 400 meters, one lap on a standard track facility, is equivalent to 0.2485 miles - about a quarter mile.

• 800 meters, two laps, is equal to .4971 miles -- about half a mile.

• The 1,500 meters, also known as the "metric mile," is equivalent to 0.9321 miles.

• 5,000 meters (a 5K) is equivalent to 3.1069 miles.

• 10,000 meters (a 10k) is equivalent to 6.2137 miles.

• The total distance of a marathon is 42,195 meters or approximately 26.2188 miles.

That's why the 5K is often referred to as being approximately 3.1 miles and a marathon is often said to be 26.2 miles. The calculator will show you the exact number for any distance entered.

Miles and yards are commonly used.

Longer distances are usually expressed as a whole number of miles and the remaining yards, such as on British road signs. As there are 1,760 yards in a mile, the total distance is first split into the whole number of miles, then the decimal part multiplied by 1,760 to find the number of remaining yards.

For example, 3,000 meters is equivalent to a distance of 1.8641 miles which can be expressed as 1 mile and 1,521 yards. This is because 0.8641 miles is equal to a distance of 1,521 yards. What is a meter?

What is a mile?

This slightly unusual precise figure comes from the old unit of "hale", which was part of the yard-pound system. One hale is equal to 660 feet, and a mile is defined as being 8 hales. So if you multiply 660 by 8, you get 5,280 feet. There are also different types of miles that should not be confused with each other. The nautical mile, which is used in navigation and aviation, is equal to 1,852 meters, and it is a much longer distance than the statute mile.
