BMI Calculator

Introduction

Welcome to our Body Mass Index (BMI) calculator! Understanding your BMI is essential for assessing your weight status and overall health. By simply inputting your height and weight, our calculator will provide valuable insights into whether you fall under the underweight, normal, overweight, or obese category. It is used to gauge excess body fat levels in both men and women.

Whether you’re looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle or embark on a fitness journey, our BMI calculator is a valuable tool to help you make informed decisions about your well-being.

BMI is calculated as weight divided by the square of the height.

Though BMI cannot measure body fat directly and is only used as a tool, it could indicate the health risks associated with having an extreme body mass index for your height.

You could also use our Body Fat Calculator to understand your body fat levels.

How to use the BMI calculator?

Using the BMI calculator, you can calculate the Body Mass Index (BMI) by entering your weight and height.

The variables in the calculator include

Weight (w) Your body weight

Height (h) Your Height

Body Mass Index (BMI) The Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated based on your weight and height using the formula

BMI=wh2\text{BMI} = \dfrac{w}{h^2}

What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is an anthropometric (study of measurements and proportions of the human body) measure of your weight and height. It is calculated as body weight divided by the square of the height. It helps us gauge excess body fat but does not measure the amount of fat directly.

Doctors use BMI not as a diagnostic tool but as a screening tool to assess the risks of various diseases associated with having an extreme body mass index.

If you have a high BMI, it indicates you have high body fat and could be at greater risk for Heart Disease, Type II Diabetes, and other health problems. A low BMI poses a greater risk for respiratory problems, digestive problems, weakened bones, etc.

The table below shows the BMI range and classification.

How is Body Mass Index (BMI) Calculated?

Body Mass Index is calculated using the following formula

BMI=wh2\text{BMI} = \dfrac{w}{h^2}

Where,

w → Body Weight (metric system → kg, Imperial system → lbs)

h → Height (metric system → m, Imperial system → inches)

Examples

Example 1

If a person has a body weight of 80 kg and a height of 190 centimetres (1.9 meters). What is his BMI?

We can calculate the BMI using the following formula

BMI=wh2=801.92=22.16\begin{aligned}\text{BMI} &= \dfrac{w}{h^2} \\[10pt] &= \dfrac{80}{1.9^2} \\[10pt] &= 22.16\end{aligned}

For a BMI of 22.16, the man is classified as the Normal weight category.
