This addition calculator tool will add a series of numbers and show the total value, number of values added, and average. As you enter each number in a line, the sum is updated instantly. Using the addition calculator:

What is addition?
Addition is the combining of two or more numbers to get a total, called the sum. The numbers being added are called addends or terms. In the equation 7+5=12, the addends are 7 and 5, and the sum is 12. Adding up an entire set of numbers is referred to as summation and is usually represented by a large Greek letter sigma. The summation from x-sub-1 to x-sub-n is: x-sub-1 + x-sub-2 + ... + x-sub-n.
The sum is also the first step in calculating the average. The average of a set of numbers is the value that results from dividing the sum of those numbers by the number of items in the set. For this reason, this tool displays both the count and the average along with the sum.
Properties of addition
Three basic rules of addition make the calculation more flexible so that it does not matter what order the numbers are added in; the end result will always be the same.

Three basic rules of addition make the calculation more flexible so that it does not matter what order the numbers are added in; the end result will always be the same.
This is how you do written addition.
To manually add several integers, line up the numbers so that equal digits are above each other and then add column by column from right to left. If the sum of a column is larger than nine, write down the ones digit and carry over the tens digit into the next column.
For example, consider 937 + 129 + 248. The ones place is 7 + 9 + 8 = 24, so we write down the 4 and carry the 2 into the tens place. The tens place is 3 + 2 + 4, to which we add the carried 2, giving us 11, so we write down the 1 and carry the 1 into the hundreds place. The hundreds place is 9 + 1 + 2, to which we add the carried 1, giving us 13, so we write down the 3 and carry the 1 into the thousands place. The thousands place is just the carried 1. Reading off the results for each place, we get 1314.

Adding decimals and negative numbers
Adding decimals is just like adding whole numbers. Line up the decimal points and add each column of digits from right to left, borrowing or carrying as necessary. If one number has more places after the decimal point than another, then write extra zeros at the end of the shorter decimal to make them the same length. For example, 37.5 + 129.44 + 48.123 can be rewritten as 37.500 + 129.440 + 48.123 = 215.063 when lined up correctly.
Adding negative numbers is like subtracting. So 8 + (-3) equals 5, and the sum of 10, -4, and -2 is 4. When positive and negative numbers are involved in a column, the total can be less than the largest number in that column, or even negative. Bank statements or constantly updated budgets work this way.

Adding up a series of numbers is one of the most commonly used calculations in everyday life. When shopping, you add up the prices of items in your cart, and when eating out everyone adds their share to split the bill. In households, expenses are added together to create a budget, while businesses add up invoice details or sales figures. Students calculate their grades by adding them up, chefs add up the quantities of ingredients used, and travelers add up the distances of different parts of their trip.

- What is the relationship between mean and sum?
The mean or arithmetic average is the value obtained by dividing the sum of a set of numbers by the number of values in the set. If the sum of five numbers is 100, then their average is 20. So the first step to calculating the mean is to add up all the values and divide by the number of values. This tool does both at once.
- Can you add negative numbers or decimals?
Yes. Adding negative numbers is the same as subtraction so 8 + (-3) equals 5 and the sum of 10, -4, and -2 is 4. When adding decimals you line up the decimal points just like when adding whole numbers. For example: 2.5 + 1.25 + 0.4 = 4.15.
