Billion to Trillion Calculator

A billion is a thousand times larger than a million and a trillion is a thousand times larger than a billion. So a trillion is a thousand times larger than a billion. To convert from billions to trillions, you divide by 1,000.

Billions and trillions:

In the American short scale a billion is 1,000,000,000. This magnitude is now used as an international standard in English. Expressed as a power of ten it is 10 to the ninth power. A trillion is 1,000,000,000,000 and is 10 to the twelfth power.

These designations are each increased by a thousandfold. Thousand becomes million, one million becomes billion, and one billion becomes trillion. Three zeros are added with every step.

For example, take a billion. If you divide it by 1,000, you get 0.0025 trillion. This number in full form is 2,500,000,000, while in scientific notation it's the product of 2.5 and 10 to the power of 10. Conversely, 0.0025 trillion again makes 2.5 billion.

Let's look at another simple example: If you divide 62 billion by 1,000, the answer is 0.062 trillion.

Short scale and long scale

Not all countries use these terms the same way. In Britain, the long scale was used in the past, where "billion" meant a million millions, what is called "trillion" in the short scale. Britain switched to the short scale some decades ago and today most areas of finance and science also use the short scale. However, the long scale can still be found in older documents and in some European languages. This tool uses only the American short scale. Please check which term is used before taking numbers from unknown sources.

Lakh and Crore

In the Indian numbering system large numbers are grouped differently. "Lakh" is equal to 100,000 and "crore" is equal to 10,000,000 or ten million. These two units are often used along with millions and billions which is why they are included in both the value conversion menu and place notation menu. One billion is equal to 100 crores and one trillion is equal to 100,000 crores.

Reading of results

Full numbers show all digits separated by commas which makes it easy to see the number of zeroes. Scientific notation represents the same number as a mantissa and an exponent of ten, which is the fastest method for checking the place values of very large numbers. The table of place values shows the representation of numbers in each unit summarized so that you can read millions, crores, and billions directly without having to convert again.

Areas of application for these conversions:

Very large numbers with many digits are often found in financial news. A country's gross domestic product (GDP), national debt or the market capitalization of the largest companies is often expressed in billions or trillions, and sometimes these units change within a single report. Only by converting to a common order of magnitude can a fair comparison be made. A similar need exists for expressing population numbers, data sizes in bytes or astronomical distances. In short: These conversions are needed when numbers are too large to be easily expressed in everyday units.

All of the conversion results shown here based on powers of ten are accurate. For extremely large inputs that go beyond a trillion, there may be slight loss of precision for full digits due to how computers store numbers. So you should use scientific notation in this range.
