When planning a day, the most important units of time are hours and minutes - for example, a movie lasts 2 hours, an office shift is 8 hours long, and a training session takes 45 minutes. Converting hours into minutes is one of the most common problems related to time. One hour corresponds exactly to 60 minutes.

This calculator will convert a time period given in hours into minutes and show the same length of time in three different ways; as pure minutes, as a hh:mm:ss time format and as seconds. To convert hours to minutes, do the following:

Since there are 60 minutes in one hour, to convert hours into minutes you simply multiply the number of hours by 60. That's all there is to it!

60 is the conversion factor and represents the number of minutes in an hour. When you write out the units, the hours cancel out leaving only minutes. Multiplying 60 min/hr by 3 hr gives 180 min. So two hours equals 120 minutes, half an hour is 30 minutes, and a quarter-hour is 15 minutes.

Convert decimal hours to minutes.

Time is often expressed as a decimal - for example, 1.5 hours, 0.75 hours, or 7.25 hours. This is often used in schedules and billing reports. The rule remains the same: multiply the decimal number of hours by 60 to get minutes.

So .42 hours is about 25 minutes, .75 hours is 45 minutes and 3.2 hours is 192 minutes. Here's a pitfall to watch out for: 1.5 hours is 90 minutes, not 105 or 150. The decimal ".5" represents part of an hour, which is 60 minutes. So .5 is half an hour (30 minutes), .25 is a quarter-hour (15 minutes) and .75 is three-quarters of an hour (45 minutes).

To convert time to minutes and seconds (hh:mm:ss):

Sometimes you need a clock format display instead of just the decimal number for hours. This calculator will show the time as whole numbers for hours, minutes and seconds - in the format hh:mm:ss.

For example, take the time 7.25 hours. This is exactly 7 hours plus 0.25 hours. Since a quarter of an hour is 15 minutes, then 7.25 hours is equal to 7 hours 15 minutes and 0 seconds, or 07:15:00. If we only care about the minutes, we can multiply 7.25 by 60, which gives us 435 minutes.

Converting the other way is just as easy. If you divide a number by 60, you will get the number of hours. In this calculator, you can switch the input unit to minutes and then check the result in hours.

So, 120 minutes is equal to 2 hours, 90 minutes is equal to 1.5 hours and 45 minutes is equal to 0.75 hours. A quarter hour, or 15 minutes, is equivalent to the decimal number 0.25 hours.

Here is an example of how to convert from start to finish.

• To convert 3 hours to minutes, multiply by 60 (the number of minutes in one hour): 3 x 60 = 180 minutes.

• To convert 7 hours to minutes, multiply by 60 (the number of minutes in one hour): 7 x 60 = 420 minutes.

• To convert 3.2 hours into minutes, multiply by 60 to get 192 minutes (or 3 hours and 12 minutes).

• To convert 7.25 hours to minutes, multiply by 60, which is 435 minutes. This is the same as 7 hours and 15 minutes or 07:15:00.

• Reversing it: To convert 120 minutes into hours, you divide by 60, which gives 2 hours.

What is an hour?

The hour (symbolized by "hr" or "h") is a unit of time equal to 60 minutes or 3600 seconds - that is, one twenty-fourth of a day. Like the minute it may be used in connection with the metric system but is not an SI base unit.

What is a minute?

The minute (symbol: min) is a unit of time which is an SI multiple (one sixtieth) of the hour or sixty seconds. It is not an SI base unit but is used in conjunction with the metric system. Note on months and years:

Days, weeks, hours, minutes and seconds are all correct - a day is always 86,400 seconds long. Months and years are more complex as the length of a calendar month is not constant and a year does not consist of an exact whole number of days.

When converting longer periods of time this tool uses an average of about 30.44 days for a month and 365.25 days for a year, resulting in an average of 12 months per year. For accurate monthly figures or specific calendar periods please calculate the actual number of days.
