Type a length of time and choose its unit. The switcher works both ways — minutes to hours, or hours, seconds, days and weeks back to minutes.

One hour is exactly 60 minutes, so to convert minutes to hours you divide the number of minutes by 60. To go back the other way, multiply hours by 60.

Minutes and hours are fundamental time measurements that we use throughout the day. For example, meetings last for 45 minutes, shifts last for 8 hours, and movies last for 90 minutes. One of the most common conversions is that an hour is exactly 60 minutes.

This calculator converts time between minutes and hours showing the same length of time in different ways at the same time: as decimal time (used for salary or price calculations), as a clock with hours and minutes and in normal seconds. You can also change the input unit to seconds, days, weeks, months or years to do the conversion.

To convert minutes to hours, do the following:

Since there are 60 minutes in an hour, divide the number of minutes by 60 to convert them into hours. That's all you need to do.

hours=minutes÷60\text{hours} = \text{minutes} \div 60

For example, 90 minutes divided by 60 equals 1.5 hours and 30 minutes divided by 60 equals 0.5 hours. One minute is equal to one sixtieth of an hour or about 0.0167 hours.

Decimal time and hour-minute display

This is a trap most people fall into. When you divide by 60, the result is a decimal number that represents time. 1.5 hours does not mean 1 hour and 5 minutes, nor does it mean 1 hour and 50 minutes.

The 1 is for hours, the 30 is for minutes. The decimal portion represents a fraction of an hour, so .5 would be half an hour (30 minutes), .25 would be a quarter-hour (15 minutes), and .75 would be three-quarters of an hour (45 minutes).

0.5 hr=0.5×60=30 min0.5\ \text{hr} = 0.5 \times 60 = 30\ \text{min}

To convert a decimal time to hours and minutes, take the integer part as the hours and multiply the decimal part by 60 to get the minutes. So 3.204 hours is approximately 3 hours and 0.204 x 60 minutes, which is about 12 minutes. This calculator shows both formats at once so you don't have to estimate anything.

This is how you convert time to minutes:

Converting the other way is also easy. Multiply hours by 60 to get a fraction. Use the input unit of Hours on the calculator and check the result in Minutes.

minutes=hours×60\text{minutes} = \text{hours} \times 60

So 2 hours is 120 minutes, 1.5 hours is 90 minutes, and a quarter of an hour is 15 minutes. A half-day work shift would be 480 minutes if it were to be calculated as 8 hours.

Payroll and time sheets: converting minutes to decimal hours.

While timesheets record time in minutes, payroll and invoices use decimal hours. So the work hours need to be converted before calculating salaries or fees. One minute is one sixtieth of an hour, so every 6-minute entry represents exactly one hundredth of an hour.

Convert first and round at the end. If you round each entry on a weekly schedule to the nearest tenth before summing, this can lead to slight inaccuracies in the total amount. So keep full decimals until the final result.

Hour scales.

Minute and hour are units of time that have a hierarchical relationship with each other, where each level is an integer multiple of the next higher level. If you understand this hierarchy, all conversions can be done using simple multiplication or division.

  • 1 minute = 60 seconds

  • 1 hour = 60 minutes = 3,600 seconds.

  • 1 day = 24 hours = 1,440 minutes = 86,400 seconds.

  • 1 week = 7 days = 168 hours = 10,080 minutes

  • 1 month (on average) = 30.44 days = 730.5 hours

  • 1 year = 365.25 days = 8,766 hours = 12 months (on average)

Examples of conversions.

Here are some examples of conversions, from start to finish.

  • Convert 90 minutes to hours: 90 divided by 60 is 1.5 hours or one hour and thirty minutes.

  • Convert the minutes to hours by dividing by 60. So, if you divide 45 by 60, you get .75 hours, which can also be expressed as 0 hours and 45 minutes.

  • Convert 192.25 minutes to hours by dividing 192.25 by 60, which is 3.204 hours. On a clock this would be shown as 3 hours, 12 minutes and 15 seconds.

  • To convert to the opposite direction, to convert 2 hours into minutes, we multiply by 60, which gives us 120 minutes.

What are minutes?

The minute (symbol: min) is a unit of time equal to 1⁄60 of an hour or 60 seconds. Although not an SI base unit, it is accepted for use with SI and is one of the oldest units of measurement still in daily use. The method in which the hour was divided into 60 parts originated in the sexagesimal (base-60) numeral system of ancient Babylon.

In calculations using decimal time, a minute is approximately 0.0167 hours and there are 1,440 minutes in a day.

What is an hour?

An hour (symbol: hr or h) is a unit of time equal to 60 minutes or 3,600 seconds and one twenty-fourth of a day. Like the minute it may be used in connection with the metric system but is not an SI base unit.

The hour is a commonly used unit for appointments, wages and travel. For example there are 8-hour shifts, 3-hour flights or 2-hour movies. The modern second is the SI base unit of time, which is defined by the oscillations of a caesium-133 atom, and both minutes and hours are based on it.

Note on months and years.

The units of day, week, hour, minute and second are correct. A day is always 86,400 seconds long. Months and years are more complex because the length of calendar months varies and a year does not have an exact number of days.

When converting longer periods of time this calculator uses an average of 30.44 days per month and 365.25 days per year so that on average there are 12 months to a full year. If you need the exact length of a particular month or calendar period please calculate the actual number of days.

Fields of application for this conversion:

  • Payroll and billing calculations: Convert minutes on timesheets to decimal hours for work reports or invoices.

  • Study and work schedule: add up the time (in minutes) required for tasks to check the total length (in hours).

  • Cooking and sports: Check at a glance the time corresponding to a baking process of 90 minutes or a training session of 45 minutes.

  • Media and travel: Use it for the length of movies, playlists or travel times given in minutes.

Please note that the conversion results are only for general reference, days and shorter units are accurate. Months and years use average values (months and "days in year"), so please calculate actual number of days for specific periods.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours is 90 minutes?

90 minutes is the same as 1.5 hours. This is because 90 divided by 60 equals 1.5. In terms of hours and minutes, this would be 1 hour and 30 minutes. The decimal value of .5 represents half an hour, or 30 minutes, not 50 minutes.

How do you convert minutes to hours?

Divide a number by 60. For example, 120 minutes is equal to 2 hours (120 divided by 60) and 45 minutes is equal to 0.75 hours. If you input a fraction into this calculator, the division will be performed immediately and the result will be shown in hours and minutes as well as seconds.

How do you convert hours to minutes?

Multiply the number of hours by 60. So 2 hours is 120 minutes and 1.5 hours is 90 minutes. Use this calculator to convert the input unit to hours and display the result in minutes.

How many minutes are in 1.5 hours?

The time is 90 minutes. It is calculated by multiplying 60 by 1.5. Please note that 1.5 hours is equal to 1 hour and 30 minutes, not 1 hour and 50 minutes. The decimal part represents the fraction of an hour determined by dividing it by 60.

How many minutes are in an hour?

An hour is exactly equal to 60 minutes or 3,600 seconds. This is the basis for all conversions. To convert from minutes to hours, divide by 60, and to convert from hours to minutes, multiply by 60.

How many decimal hours is 45 minutes?

45 minutes is equivalent to 0.75 decimal hours. This is because 45 divided by 60 equals 0.75. This decimal time format is used in payroll and billing systems. Fifteen minutes is 0.25 hours, thirty minutes is 0.5 hours, and three quarters of an hour is 0.75 hours.

Why are time sheets using decimal hours instead of hours and minutes?

Decimal time is easy to add and multiply by an hourly rate, so it's often stored in this format for payroll, invoicing or timesheet programs. 6 minutes is a tenth of an hour, so 6 minutes is the same as 0.1, 15 minutes is the same as 0.25, and 30 minutes is the same as 0.5. To ensure accuracy in totals, fractions are converted first and rounded at the end.

How many hours is 120 minutes?

120 minutes is exactly equal to 2 hours, because 120 divided by 60 is 2. Similarly, 180 minutes would be 3 hours and 240 minutes would be 4 hours. Any whole number of 60 minutes will be the same as that many hours.
