How to convert quarts to cups:

A U.S. quart is exactly equal to four U.S. cups. To convert quarts to cups, multiply the number of quarts by four.

For example, two quarts is equal to eight cups (by multiplying two by four). Three quarts would be twelve cups and half a quart would be two cups. This is not an approximation but an exact relationship since the U.S. cup is defined as exactly one-fourth of a U.S. quart.

Conversely, to convert cups to quarts, divide the number of cups by four since there are four cups in a quart.

So an 8 cup amount would be the same as if you divide 8 by 4 and then multiply that result by 2. Five cups is equal to 1.25 quarts, which is the same amount you get when you add a quart plus one cup. Why a quart is four cups

The relationship between the units is made over gallons. The capacity of a cup is not always the same

There is one point here that can be confusing. This conversion tool uses the standard U.S. cup of 236.5882365 milliliters by default. Since this is exactly a quarter of a U.S. quart, it takes exactly four cups to fill up a quart.

However, there are other standards for cups as well. The nutritional information uses the legal US cup of 240 ml, while Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand use the metric cup of 250 ml. When you take into account these larger cups, a US quart is only about 3.94 legal cups or 3.79 metric cups, which isn't exactly four cups. In cooking this difference is small, less than one tablespoon per cup. However, conversion tools show the metric cups separately so that you can check it out.

The US dry quart, used for agricultural products like berries, is larger and has a volume of about 1.101 liters. The British (imperial) quart is even larger with a volume of about 1.137 liters.

Since the British quart is larger, more small UK cups will fit inside it. When a typical American recipe simply says "quart", this almost always refers to the US liquid quart. So that's what we'll use as our default here. If a UK recipe requires using a UK quart, please change your input unit to "UK quart".
