Why are four quarts a gallon?

This result can be derived from pints as well. Since two pints make a quart and eight pints make a gallon, one gallon is equal to eight divided by two, which is four quarts. This also applies for conversions into cups. One quart is equivalent to 4 cups, and one gallon is equivalent to 16 cups.

The main values for this calculator use the U.S. liquid gallon and the U.S. liquid quart.

A U.S. dry gallon used for agricultural products and grain is larger and equals about 4.405 liters. An imperial gallon is even larger and equals about 4.546 liters. Since an imperial gallon is about 20% larger than a U.S. gallon, one U.S. gallon is approximately equal to 0.83 imperial gallons. You can see the difference by changing your input unit to either "imperial gallons" or "quarts."

What is a quart?
