The salary calculator tool can convert a given amount into other pay frequencies. If you enter an hourly, weekly, monthly or annual salary, the corresponding amounts for the other frequencies will be shown. It answers practical questions that often come up when looking for jobs, such as what is the annual income with an hourly rate of $30,, how much per paycheck if your annual salary is $95,000 or what is the actual hourly wage after paid holidays and vacation days are taken into account.

Salary and wages

Although these two terms are often used synonymously, they differ in the way that pay is calculated. A salary is a fixed annual amount agreed upon in a contract and does not depend on the actual hours worked per week. On the other hand, wages are compensation for work actually performed and are calculated as an hourly rate based on the number of hours worked.

Salaried employees are generally not subject to overtime rules, so no additional pay is due for hours worked over the standard workweek. Hourly employees who are not exempt from these rules are generally entitled to overtime pay at a rate of 1.5 times their regular hourly wage for any hours worked in excess of 40 per week. Regardless of the name, this calculator can be used for both. It simply converts an amount from one pay frequency to another.

Calculation method

All calculations are based on the annual gross income. Here is an example: Hourly wage of $30, eight hours per day, 260 working days a year, so 52 weeks in a year with five-day week. The annual gross income before adjustment for vacation time amounts to:

$30×8×260=$62,400\$30 \times 8 \times 260 = \$62{,}400

Once the annual salary is determined, it can be converted to other pay frequencies by simple division. The weekly salary is divided by 52, monthly salary by 12, quarterly payment by 4, biweekly payment by 26 and semi-monthly payment by 24. Although both are usually paid twice a month, the amounts differ because of these divisions.

Misaligned pay versus aligned pay

For employees who are paid on an hourly or daily rate basis, they will only be compensated for the actual hours or days worked. As there is no pay for public holidays and leave, their actual annual salary would be lower than the original hourly/daily rate. The calculator shows both the simple converted amount without adjustment as well as the adjusted amount where the corresponding number of days are deducted.

Assume there are 10 holidays and 15 vacation days. Subtracting the unpaid vacation days (25) from the working days (260), results in a number of 235 paid work days.

$30×8×(26025)=$56,400\$30 \times 8 \times (260 - 25) = \$56{,}400

Entering an hourly or daily rate will be treated as a non-adjusted hourly rate. All other pay frequencies from weekly to annual are calculated as amounts that take into account vacation time. This is usually the way employees report their salary. When the number of holidays and vacation days is set to zero, the amounts in both columns will be identical.

Varied payout frequency

Employers use different pay schedules. Changing the pay schedule may change the amount per paycheck but will not change the total annual amount. The common pay frequencies are as follows:

Frequency

Paychecks per year

Notes

Weekly

52

Paid every week, usually Fridays. More checks, higher payroll cost.

Bi-weekly

26

Every two weeks. The most common US schedule.

Semi-monthly

24

Twice a month, often the 15th and the last day.

Monthly

12

Once a month. Common outside the US.

Example of calculating $50 per hour.

Assuming the hourly rate is $50,, weekly hours are 40, working five days a week and there are 10 bank holidays and 15 annual leave days. The unadjusted annual salary would be $50, multiplied by 40, multiplied by 52 which gives $104,000. After deducting the unpaid holiday days (25) this leaves 235 working days (originally 260), so the adjusted annual salary is $94,000. The following rows show either the total amount per year divided by the number of pay periods in a year.

Factors that affect salary include:

Income is not simply a conversion but is influenced by a broader market environment. Income tends to increase with age and peaks at some point. Education level, work experience, and rare skills also contribute to income growth. There are also large differences between industries and locations. Even within the same occupation, salaries can vary depending on location, with local cost of living sometimes offsetting what would otherwise be a high salary. At the end of 2025, the average weekly income for full-time employees in the US was approximately $1.214 dollars, which equates to an annual salary of around $63.128 dollars. However, there are very large differences hidden behind this average.

The base salary is only part of the total compensation package. Benefits such as health insurance, retirement contributions, paid holidays and vacation time, and bonuses all have a real value. When comparing job offers, consider these benefits along with the base salary. Independent contractors generally do not receive these benefits and therefore often need higher hourly rates to achieve the same level of income.

This calculator converts income amounts between different pay frequencies and estimates the impact of unpaid leave days. It does not take into account taxes or deductions. For net after-tax income please use a separate net salary calculator tool. The amounts shown are estimates only and should be used as general reference only.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?

To calculate your annual salary from an hourly wage, multiply the hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week and then by 52. For example, if your hourly wage is $30 and you work a 40-hour week, your annual salary would be $30 x 40 x 52 = $62,400. This is your gross annual salary. If you want to know how much you will actually earn after accounting for unpaid vacation days or holidays, an online calculator can use the percentage of actual working days to adjust the amount accordingly.

What is the difference between a gross and net annual salary?

The gross annual salary assumes that a paycheck is issued for every working day of the year, which equates to 260 days in a five-day work week. The net annual salary takes into account unpaid holidays and vacation days, thus reflecting the actual income an individual would receive over the course of a year at an hourly or daily rate. Salaries are usually already expressed as net amounts. Therefore, this calculator treats pay frequencies that are weekly or less as net amounts and hourly and daily rates as gross amounts.

Are fortnightly and half monthly payments the same thing?

It is not the same thing. Bi-weekly pay means that a paycheck is issued every two weeks, and there are 26 paychecks per year. Semi-monthly pay means twice a month, usually on the 15th of the month and at the end of the month, and there are 24 paychecks per year. Since 26 is more than 24, bi-weekly pay results in slightly smaller individual payments than semi-monthly pay if annual salary is equal. Also, with bi-weekly pay you get a third paycheck every two months.

How many working hours and days are there per year?

The standard working year is 52 weeks, five days a week, for a total of 260 workdays. At eight hours per day, this works out to 2,080 hours worked annually. These are the default values in the calculator. This is also why the hourly rate of $25 turns into a round-ish salary of $52,000 will result in an approximate round number annual salary. If your weekly working hours or days change, then the total amount will change as well.

Does this calculator take taxes into account?

No. This is a gross annual salary conversion tool. It converts an amount to different pay frequencies and adjusts for the number of paid vacation days, but it does not take into account income tax, social security contributions, health insurance or other deductions. To calculate your net annual salary after taxes, use a net annual salary calculator. That calculator will use the gross annual salary calculated by this tool as its starting point.
