The bench press calculator estimates the maximum weight - the heaviest weight you can lift once - for a given exercise based on previous training sets. When you input the weight and number of repetitions, the tool calculates the maximum weight backwards. It is also possible to do the calculation in reverse: enter your max weight and desired number of reps, and the tool will show you what weight you should select.
What is maximum weight and why it's estimated?
Your 1RM (one rep max) is the maximum weight you can lift once with correct technique and form in a particular exercise. Most training programs are based on this value, using percentages of it to determine your working weights.
Testing your actual max weight is very hard on the joints and usually requires a spotter. Also there's a chance that you're not in good enough shape to get your full max out of it. By estimating your max with a lighter weight that you can control, you avoid those risks while still getting numbers useful for your training plan.

The most commonly used model is the Epley formula, where w represents weight and r represents repetitions.
Assume that you bench press 225 for 5 repetitions, then r is equal to 5 and the estimated result would be as follows:
Although they are similar concepts, different researchers approximate slightly different curves. This calculator offers seven of them so that you can see how much the results vary from model to model. With few repetitions, the results are very similar but as the number of repetitions increases, the difference gradually becomes larger.

Training intensity
When you know your max weight, you can convert it to training weights. The tables and graphs in the calculator show what percentage of your max you are likely to lift for each repetition number. Fewer reps are closer to your max and are good for high-intensity or pure strength training. Medium rep numbers are ideal for building both strength and muscle mass. More reps mean a lower percentage, which is better for improving muscular endurance.
These percentages are derived from the formula selected and therefore correspond to the estimated maximum weight rather than a general chart.
How much should you be able to bench press relative to your body weight?
It is more practical to look at your bench press weight in relation to your bodyweight than compare it with fixed numbers, as a 150 pound lifter and a 250 pound lifter do not have the same starting point. If you enable the strength rating function and add gender and weight, then the calculator will show your bench press weight as a multiple of your bodyweight and give a rough estimate of level.
Based on data from non-drug-using trainers, the bench press value for men with average training level is usually about 1.25 times their body weight, while it is about 1.6 times for experienced men. The corresponding values for women are closer to 0.7 and 1.0 times of their body weight respectively. These numbers are not guidelines but serve as a reference. Depending on age, length of limbs, and training experience, this reference line can vary.
How to correctly interpret the estimated results.
These are estimates not measurements. With a training set of one to ten repetitions you can usually get results within a few percent of actual max weight with the right formula. Above ten reps inaccuracies occur as these models are based on fewer reps and fatigue becomes a major factor.
Execution is also important. If you bounce the barbell off your chest, limit range of motion or leave your butt off the bench, you'll artificially increase reps and overestimate results. To get accurate numbers, perform a set of three to six heavy reps using proper form and check them regularly over weeks to reflect strength development.

- How accurate is this bench press calculator tool?
With a training set of one to ten repetitions you can usually estimate the maximum weight within a few percent accuracy with the correct formula. The more repetitions performed the less accurate it becomes so a heavy set of three to six reps is more accurate than fifteen.
- What formula should I use for maximum weight?
Epley and Brzycki provide a reliable standard method that ranges from one to ten repetitions with the results being very similar in this range. Lombardi and Mayhew tend to show slightly better results at higher repetition numbers. As there is no formula that will work for everyone, it's more reliable to compare different formulas and check the average as well as the range of values rather than relying on a single number.
- How many times do you have to bench press with 225 to get up to a weight of 315?
According to the Epley formula, it is about twelve repetitions. If you perform twelve repetitions of bench press with a weight of 225, then your estimated maximum weight that you can lift will be 315. This is because you add one to 225 (which is twelve divided by thirty) and then multiply the result, which gives 315.
- How much should you be able to bench press based on your weight?
The values vary by body weight, gender and training duration. Intermediate men who do not use doping can usually handle 1.25 times their body weight in bench press, while advanced men manage about 1.6 times. The corresponding values for women are approximately 0.7 and 1.0 times their body weight. It is more important to measure your own progress by past performance than to refer to a single standard.
- Why do you estimate the maximum weight and not try it directly?
If you try to lift the actual maximum weight it can put a strain on your joints and require an assistant. It can also be affected by physical conditions that day. By doing sets with controlled light weights and estimating the max weight, risks are avoided while still getting values to base a training plan from.
